3M™ 9832: Double-Sided Tape for General Purposes and Porous Surfaces

The 9832 by 3M™ offers a highly tacky and solvent-free acrylic adhesive on both sides of a thin polyester backing. 3M™, rather modestly, describes this double-sided option as a “general purpose tape with improved temperature resistance.”

This improved performance in varying temperatures offers your production process certain benefits. As do other traits of 9832’s adhesive, carrier, and liner – all of which, we explore in detail below.

Performance Benefits that 3M™ 9832’s Adhesive Brings to Your Product

  • Improved temperature resistance
  • Quick stick results
  • Excellent bond to various surfaces

9832 Rolls by 3MImproved temperature resistance: With a short-term resistance of -40°F up to 250°F, 9832 meets the needs of most gasket fabricators, who work with highly variable temperatures.

And its good shear strength performance (that is, its inner strength) in elevated heat means you can count on less slipping, creeping, or breaking during production. 9832 maintains good cohesion even during long-term exposure to heat up to 150°F.

Quick stick results: 9832 uses for its adhesive the 3M™ 300MP High Tack Acrylic. It’s a soft adhesive, ideal for those looking for or requiring high initial adhesion. The immediate bond supports a more efficient production process.

Excellent bond to various surfaces: Its soft adhesive provides a reliable bond to porous, rough, uneven, high surface energy (HSE), and low surface energy (LSE) substrates. This good holding power to a wide range of surfaces makes 9832 a good alternative to glue, screws, and rivets in foam lamination, gasket attachments, and woodworking projects.

Designed to bond to most plastics, foams, particle board, melamine, HPL, wood, plywood, and fabrics, 9832 certainly achieves the purpose behind being general purpose.

Converting Benefits that 3M™ 9832’s Liner and Carrier Bring to Your Business

Why care if a tape offers benefits for your converter?

  • Faster lead times
  • More money saved
  • Better return on investment

Faster lead times: Simply put, when a tape’s easy to work with, that work gets done faster. And 9832 has a carrier and a liner optimized for smooth production. The PET film backing and the 58 lb polycoated Kraft paper liner add dimensional stability and more user-friendly handling during common processes such as lamination, slitting, and die-cutting.

These perks to your converter allow them to work more efficiently. And by so doing, they allow your converter to offer you faster lead times, which help to streamline your overall production process.

More money saved: Since the liner and carrier offer easy handling and dimensional stability, they ensure that the process ends up being less labor intensive. Case in point, you save money on labor costs, cleanup fees, and price-per-piece amounts.

And another plus of a general-purpose solution like 9832 is how it gives you more outside-the-box flexibility when working within budget constraints. For example, you can use 9832 as an economical option for graphics attachment. This can help you avoid pricier tapes that may actually be overkill for what your project calls for.

Better return on investment: When failures happen on the floor, your ROI decreases. That’s wasted product that you paid for. When thinking of getting the best ROI possible, one key detail is the material’s quality. So, always look for traits in tapes that make failure rates go down. When you see manufacturers talking about converter benefits, such as 9832’s easy handling and dimensional stability, they’re indirectly cluing you into ROI risks and benefits.

3M™ 9832HL: A Heavier, Thicker Liner for Even Easier Converting

Double Sided 3M 9832

The 9832HL offers all the same performance strengths as 9832. The only differences are in the liner. It’s heavier, at 83 lb, and it’s thicker, at 6.2 mil.

Its heavier liner adds the benefit of excellent moisture stability for processes where it’s vital for the tape to lay flat. Due to the extra weight, it’s much less likely for the tape to curl up or shift. And the added thickness makes 9832HL a great choice for processes such as kiss-cutting and steel rule die-cutting.

And again, while these traits seem more specifically important for your converter to know, knowing these advantages gives you a better idea of which tape makes the most sense for your application and your ROI.
